What I do

I am part of a team that takes parts from the company’s machining and lasering sections to assemble them. We don’t tend to work on full objects – for some customers we do things like weld nuts and clips onto smaller pieces of metal, for others we make larger assemblies of multiple sub parts.

How I became a technician

At school I loved electronics. I also did some work experience in welding which I really enjoyed, and those things led me to consider a practical career. At college I did Maths, English Language and Physics A-levels as I thought they would help me.

I started a two-year apprenticeship scheme in 2018 and since then I’ve been employed by Hydram. I’ve also started my Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Manufacturing Engineering and I do a day a week at college for that.

I am much more practical than academic - I would encourage people to look into apprenticeships as there are lots of opportunities.

A typical day in my
working life

Every day I work with a variety of parts and every job is different. Some parts are really challenging to work with, while other tasks are more straightforward. But the variety really breaks up the day. Sometimes I need to work out the process I need to follow, while other times I can do it straight away.

The best bits about working in a team

There are 10 of us working on my shift. We all work independently and do our own jobs, but if someone has knowledge of the job you are doing, then they are always happy to show you the correct way of doing the job. I am lucky that I am part of a team that is very supportive - we all help each other.

The most exciting thing I’ve achieved so far in my job

I was awarded Apprentice of the Year, which was great! There was a presentation, and my name is on a shield here.

The next steps in my career journey

I'm really interested in underwater welding – I think it would be great to do that!
