Building Design Technician

I am involved in all aspects of the business, working in the office and on-site. My role includes surveying and measuring up houses before coming back to the office and using 3D modelling software to bring any proposed changes to life – these can range from a simple extension to a whole set of new build houses.
I will produce a plan, like one an architect might create, but then will break it down further – looking at how to construct it for the benefit of the builders and contractors. For instance, showing how a roof is put together and the type of foundation needed – anything the builders need to know when it comes to constructing the project.
Usually, my day starts around 9.00 am. I will set myself up, get the computer going and plan my day - reading through any emails and making a to-do list. My priorities will vary depending on the day but might include updating plans that have been changed by the client on our 3D modelling software, creating a new set of plans, or researching regulations and planning laws. I am also constantly liaising with clients via email or phone to discuss changes they would like to make following an initial plan.
The afternoons can be similar, or I might do a site visit. I’m not often glued to a screen for the whole day.
I love the creativity and responsibility I have in my role. I’m a big fan of taking what I have pictured and putting it into a design – it’s also amazing to see my designs get brought to life.
I like working in a team because you bounce ideas off each other and help each other out - we have a whiteboard to brainstorm ideas and concepts.
The feeling when you see a project you have helped design becoming a reality is amazing - especially if it’s a new build!
I want to take on more responsibility, so would eventually like to become a manager and have my own team. I’m excited to gain more experience and learn more about the industry.
