School Technician

Supporting teachers by preparing equipment and materials for practical lessons.

How this role makes a difference

Practical science in schools and colleges is important is important not only because it enhances the students learning but it can motivate, engage and enthuse students and can give them the required skills to pursue STEM based careers after school.

Practical lessons need to be safe, work well and give the required results to support the theory being taught.

As a school or college science technicians you can make an essential contribution to teaching and learning through practical means.

The kind of work you'll do

  • Prepare resources for practical lessons e.g. make chemical solutions, grow microbes, maintain and adapt equipment
  • Maintain laboratories ensuring they are fully equipped and safe to work in
  • Design, trial and develop new experiments and demonstrations that support the curriculum and enhance learning
  • Liaise with teaching staff and suppliers
  • Be responsible for the safe storage of chemicals
  • Deal with health and safety related incidents
  • Take care of any plants and animals within the department
  • You may also demonstrate in class or support students in class

School and college science can cover a wide range of scientific disciplines form biology, chemistry and physics to applied sciences such as environmental, forensic and medical science.

No two days are the same from soldering to dealing with giant African land snails the role is varied and different.

You can make a greater contribution the student enrichment by leading or helping to lead Science clubs and associated activities
