Scientists not the Science explores what it means to be a scientist and is produced by Dr Stuart Higgins, a research associate at Imperial College London.

This week’s ‘technician special’ episode looked at how conducting experiments, analysing results and teaching students isn’t just the work of academics – technicians do it too.

Dr Higgins interviewed two technicians working in the teaching labs of King’s College London before chatting to the Technicians Make it Happen communications manager, Michelle Rea.

Michelle said: “We’ve done a really good job in the last few years in this country of promoting the high-profile jobs in STEM, but for every Tim Peake that goes into space there’s hundreds of technicians that have got him there. Those jobs can be just as interesting, exciting and rewarding, and there are a lot more of them. Unfortunately, young people just aren’t as aware of these jobs.”
